TIXEL
A new option for dry eye treatment

What is Tixel?
We are proud to be the first office in Boston to offer Tixel i, a new treatment for dry eye. Tixel is a new FDA cleared treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction. It's a non-invasive option that aims to alleviate both the symptoms and signs of Dry Eye.

How does Tixel work?
Tixel uses gentle, controlled thermal energy applied to the eyelids to stimulate the meibomian glands and improve oil flow. The treatment helps melt thickened oils, improve gland function, and reduce inflammation on the eyelid margin—without anything going inside the eye.

How is Tixel different from other dry eye treatments?
Tixel is unique because it is non-invasive and does not touch the eye itself.
Treatments are quick, comfortable, and can also improve the health and appearance of the eyelid skin including fine lines. Many patients appreciate that Tixel treats both dry eye disease and has an eyelid aesthetic benefit at the same time.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Tixel?
Symptoms such as burning, gritty sensations, fluctuating vision, watery eyes, or frequent styes may suggest meibomian gland dysfunction. The best way to determine if Tixel is right for you is through a comprehensive dry eye evaluation. Dry eye is not one-size-fits-all, and treatment is always personalized.

What does the treatment feel like?
Most patients describe Tixel as a warm, tapping sensation on the eyelids. Treatments are very quick—typically lasting just a couple of minutes—and are generally well tolerated with minimal downtime.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are typically mild. You may notice temporary redness, warmth, or mild eyelid tenderness that resolves within a day or two.

How many treatments do I need?
Tixel is usually performed as a series of three treatments, spaced a few weeks apart. This allows for gradual improvement in gland function and symptom relief. Maintenance treatments may be recommended depending on your dry eye severity and long-term goals.

Does my insurance cover this?
Unfortunately, insurance companies have not yet adopted coverage for this newer technology. Similar to dental or fertility treatments, this is a medically beneficial procedure that is often considered elective by insurance.

Is there a payment plan?
Yes! We offer CareCredit, which includes options such as 6 months interest-free financing, allowing you to spread payments out over time.

How often do I need to repeat Tixel treatments?
Tixel is both a treatment and a preventative therapy. After completing the initial series, your doctor will monitor your symptoms and gland health at follow-up visits to determine if and when maintenance treatments are needed.
